Wet Fun Sports

There are a large number of sports that involve water and there are many more sports to be added. Some of the sports include only one part related to swimming, as for example Triathlon.

Swimming is a popular recreational activity and a competitive sport. You'll need it for all other water sports. There are many health benefits of swimming, but it also entails risks if basic precautions are not taken. Learn to swim in clothes.

Falling in is part of the game

Be ready for an occasional dunking. If your boat capsizes, don't panic; it can be flipped back over. Over-turned boats float. First, assure that all passengers are safe before attempting to retrieve equipment.

Stay with your boat unless you judge that doing so will be dangerous. If you can stay with the boat, guide it into quiet water. Float in your life jacket on your back, with your feet downstream. If the water is cold, get ashore quickly.

Cold Weather

Dress properly for existing and expected conditions. Extreme cold requires wet or dry suits, but in more moderate conditions layered clothing is recommended. Fabric choices should include those that provide warmth, even when wet.

Cotton should never be worn in cold weather conditions because they "wick" heat away from the body when wet, accelerating the affects of hypothermia.

Tennis shoes are best for many water sports and should be worn at all times. Bare feet have no place in boating; the terrain on land and the bottoms of streams and beaches can be hazardous.

Hot Weather

Hot weather can be as dangerous as cold water. Carry plenty of drinking water. The water surface and aluminum canoes cause considerable reflection on sunny days which may lead to serious sunburn, heat exhaustion or sunstroke. Everyone enjoys getting out in the sun, but water sports in a swimsuit or bikini can be dangerous. You should wear light, quick drying clothes that cover your body.

A wide-brimmed hat protects your head, neck, and ears from the sun and help prevent heat exhaustion or sunstroke. Know the symptoms and first aid procedures for these serious conditions.

Water Safety

Recreational activity are usually done in calm protected waters and during good weather. Even so, conditions can change rapidly, and you may get into difficulties. This is no problem if you're prepared and well trained.
