Thailand is already known by our readers as the wettest country in the world, but the mud festivals are still unknown. You can't find much information in tourist guides because these events are of no interest to a "normal" tourist.
The mud festival in Yasoton is known as the "Bung Ban Fai" festival. This takes place in the whole province of Isan, but the city of Yasoton has the best festival, just like as Chiang-Mai is the best place for Songkran.
Rockets are fired in the air by neighbourhoods and clubs. The best rocket is the one that flies the longest time in the air. The symbol is that the rockets are send to the gods to ask for rain. The time is just before the rice is planted in the fields.
The tradition says that if someone has a bad roket, which explodes or is going too short, the maker of the rocket is punished by being rolled in the mud.
But in practice, everyone who wants it, just jumps in and slides in the mud. Hundreds of young people are wallowing the whole day in the mud. It is another excuse for good soaking wet fun.
