Welcome to the Brighton Swimfit Group

Our Beach Welcome to the readers of the The Argus in Brighton & Hove.

We're a bunch of wacky wet friends from Brighton and London who just love swimming and lifesaving. We swim in clothes at every opportune moment because it's a great fitness exercise and terrific fun.

Learning to swim fully clothed may even save your life one day. Did you know that around 70% of all casualties whom lifesavers pull out of the water are fully clothed? We train for that, we are prepared.

You can learn about water safety, personal survival, and enjoy fun exercises and games which build your strength, endurance and stamina through resistance training, This is not a lifesaving class as such, but if you wish to take a lifesaving exam we can prepare you for the course and then put you in touch with a local lifesaving club.

You need to book with us to join our wet fun because we meet at various locations, subject to pool availability, or me may plan a trip somewhere. Hence you need to contact us to find out where we are. Call 01273 309432 for details.

Winter Pool Sessions

Recommended clothing: T-shirts, football outfits, tracksuits, rainwear, lycra gear. Not your old laundry! Please don't wear cut-offs, leather or shoes, as this may clog up the sand in the pool's filter systems.

During school and university terms we rent a lane in a public indoor pool near Brighton. It's great fun splashing around and swimming many lengths fully clothed. We adjust the training level by adding different layers of clothes, just like you add extra weights in a gym. We've developed new training exercises which are both fun and exhausting. It's not all hard work, we often just relax and talk about things we enjoy.

Our first lifesaving swimfit session was on Monday, 13 July 1998, when we rented a pool lane for an hour, whilst the rest of the pool was used for Aquarobics by some stout women. In 2002 our swimfit fun and games sessions had about 4 to 8 visitors each time. Considering that we only had one lane it got a little crowded at times; but who cares when you're having fun.

Beach Fun Summer Beach Fun

Recommended clothing: Dress up warm and protect against windchill with an anorak or poncho.

In the summer months we take surfboards, canoes, or inflatable boats to Saltdean Beach, just 5 miles east of Brighton (use bus 14, 27, or 712 to Saltdean Lido). We go rockhopping, coasteering, paddle the windsurfer, drift along in a kayak on a quiet day, capsize, play beachball in the water, or just splash around.

Whilst we have great fun on the beach we gain experience that may help us avoid some danger one day. It's amazing how much the sea differs from the pool, especially when it comes to water safety and personal survival. The water isn't always clear, it's colder, has currents, tides, and little beasties that sting or bite. All in all an entirely new experience.

So if you live near Brighton, come in and join us.
