The one basic piece of equipment that you should consider before a snorkeling or freediving trip, is an exposure suit or skinsuit (diveskins).

Usually made from Spandex or Darlexx, they add a small amount of warmth, though not as much as a wet suit, a great deal of protection against sunburn, stings from jellyfish, sea lice (which is actually a larval jellyfish), Fire Coral, or contact with anything else that you might not want to bump your skin into.

You won't get stung by any coral if you happen to brush into it. Don't touch any of the coral formations that you see because some of it can sting you bad! It also will kill the coral. Coral is very slow growing. Don't touch anything underwater.

These skinsuits will typically range from US$50 to US$150 and can even include a hood for more protection and warmth.
