In Holland we have a number of famous student row-clubs. Names like Eagir, Nereus, Njord, Skadi are known all over the world. One of the most important ones is Laga from the student city Delft. I was member for some years. In my first year I won in the eight the Head of the River (Amsterdam) and the Varsety. The last contest is more famous, because of the jump of the members of the winning club in the water, then because of the good match. In my first year I have to go in too, because Laga won the main contest. At the start of the year we have to introduce new members. With a big boat we go to Njord in Leiden or Skadi in Rotterdam. Besides some rowing there are a lot of watergames. First the new students have to fight there way to the frontdore of the building. The receiving club has some firehoses and a lot of buckets. So everyone is quiet wet after some minutes.

My first year we are going to Skadi. I had a camera with me, but most of the picts are lost, because I estimate the light wrong. A few of the picts from the directory Leiden are in reality from Rotterdam. Some miles for the arrival we have to take off our normal clothes and change in P.E. kit. It was rather cold. So I put over my P.E. kit my long corduroy trousers and jumper again. When arriving on the spot, there was no time to take my jumper and trousers off. The raft, normally used to come ashore with the boats, was turned and we have to fight us a way to the shore. The young Skadi-men were waiting for us. Together the raft was slowly sinking in the water and everyone become completely soaked, while I had soaked two of my clothes in one go.

The receiving club built from drums two rafts for a contest between the both clubs. When the contest was about to start I toke fully clothed place on the raft. Together with some beautiful and rather stupid boy, fully clothed too with jeans, shoes, shirt, t-shirt and jacket. He was obviously totally unaware from what was going to happen. We started to paddle and the older members of the clubs are talking against the new one on shore, to get them jumped in the water to help their collegues. In a ahort time we are surrounded with all swimming people fully clothed and trying to get us in the water too. I have fight to stay dry, but nothing was to do about it. I no time the raft lays upside down and I and the beautiful boy have to climb the raft again and again and again. A lot of boys didn't have any other dry clothes with them. After the big wetting we go to the building of these corps in the middle of the town. All the boys without dry clothes have to join us totally soaked for the complete evening. Very nice...
