Trafalgar Square in the heart of London's West End was laid out in the 1830s with the two fountains being completed in 1845. History does not relate whether the Victorians celebrated this event in traditional style.

It has long been the place for political demonstration and national celebration. Each New Year dozens of people used to celebrate by jumping, or being pushed, into the fountains. Unfortunately a serious accident some years ago when people were crushed in a crowd surge has resulted in the fountains now being drained each year so don't bother to plan your trip around this event.

If you read the regulations concerning the use of Trafalgar Square you will realise that most activities are illegal. Fortunately the authorities are generally benign and providing that you are not causing damage or inconveniencing others, nobody will be concerned. So go right ahead and plunge into those fountains.
