Should Hanson be honorary WackyWet members?
Well, We have seen them in the pool several times fully clothed. Hanson don't even strip down to their bathers in the pool. There was an interview that took place in a pool in Australia in which Taylor said: "Yeah, We just swim fully clothed to release stress." Zac and Ike said: "Yeah, It's just fun!" Ike remarked: "You should interview us more often." We'd love to.In the "MMMBop" video you can see them briefly at the beach in wetsuits. The music track was produced at the Dust Brothers' laid-back studio, complete with swimming pool. "It was cool meeting the Dust Brothers. We recorded stuff in their house and messed around in their pool. Zac played the drums soaking wet on one song." says Taylor.
The "Weird" video is the best video yet, at least in our opinion. They group approached director Gus Van Sant (best known for directing "Good Will Hunting" and "My Private Idaho") and told him their ideas for the video. He said they were complicated but he'd work w/them if they wanted. It shows the group as street performers in the NYC subway! They actually closed down the subway for Hanson! They walk through the subway train where everyone's wearing suits and ties and then about 10 sets of twins are there. Hanson walks through and jumps into one section where they swim! Cool huh?
Another very tricky part of the video was having Hanson swim underwater and lip sync to the song at the same time. The guys had to wear weights so that they wouldn't float out of the shot. And they had to hold their breath for a whole verse while they swam toward the camera. Ike, Tay, and Zac pulled it off without any gulps of water. After it began to air around the world, Mercury Records told us that "Weird" had become a number one play request on MTV- right up there with Puff Daddy and Madonna which made me happy, and Hanson happy too."
We now are entering the water. Very Terminator 2-like (the water stuff, I mean). At this point they are floating in water through the subway (all the other people are gone) and they look kinda strange. This was really shot under water in L.A. It's great effort of it, because they could've pretended to "swim" against a green screen, but they got in the water and held their breath and sang.
I completely cracked up when I first saw this picture because, man, look at Tay's lips. They're a completely round circle. He's a fish! Now, what does the water scene mean? After long and careful thought about this, I have come up with nothing, other than the fact that it is darn weird. It doesn't relate to anything in the song (I don't think). It's just plain strange and weird. Cool effects though.
Here we have Tay again. Tay releases the most bubbles in the water scene (meaning he's losing the most air). Zac lets out almost no bubbles (probably because the poor boy doesn't sing a thing in this scene). Good facial expressions, though. It's pretty darn hard to be emotional when you have no air in your lungs.
At least there is a shot of Zac in this scene, even if he doesn't sing. I thought I would take the time to remind all of you how this scene was done. Tay told the story on MTV Live, but not all of you have that. The boys were weighted down (with small weights) during this scene. They couldn't go to the surface even if they wanted to (which I'm sure at times they did). In between takes, crew members would stick scuba tubes in their mouths so they could breath. Whenever they ran out of breath, they would have to motion that they needed air and the scene would stop. This was filmed in a pool which I think was in LA. The subway train was filmed seperately in New York (without the guys in it). Since the bottom of the pool was blue, they could use a technique called blue screen filming. Everything that is blue in the original pool scene is replaced with the subway scene. (So it's a good idea that they not wear blue clothing, which they aren't).
Sorry, Ike just looks strange in this shot. I think he should have worn more form fitting atire, because throughout the scene his shirts were floating out and falling off his shoulders (not all the way of course). He should have actually taken his cue from Taylor, whose clothing is very, very form fitting in all the subway scenes. You will see a little later on.
Really, what more is there to say? Ike was very emotional in this scene, getting into the lyrics. He actually probably did the best at lip synching underwater.
Here they are leaving the water. Sorry, I couldn't get Ike into the shot (he the thing emerging from the water). The video just goes too fast. But, hey! Look, doesn't it look like the exact same place where they jumped into the water? Where were they swimming. They obviously didn't get too far. Now we see the extreme form fitting nature of Tay's shirt. I think he needs more meat on his bones before he'll be able to pull that off. Please, Tay, look at Zac. His shirt is the normal size for a person his height and weight. Does he just buy it two sizes too small or something? Or...uh...maybe it's supposed to fit that way...
