Beautiful Thing
Also available as a book.
Two teenage guys fall in love and jump into a lake to fetch a football. Short wet scene, but good movie. A grim, gritty South London housing estate makes an unlikley setting for a romantic fairy-tale, but Hetti MacDonald's teenage love story all but brings it off. Adapted by screenwriter Jonathan Harvey from his own stage play, Beautiful Thing tells how teenage loner Jamie falls for next-door neighbour Ste, one of the tough kids who bullies him at school. Amazingly, he finds his feelings reciprocated, and the two progress to a tender, tentative affair.
Sidestepping conventional notions of working-class homophobia, the film succeeds in presenting its central relationship not as anything startlingly different, but simply as a teenage romance--with all the joy and heartbreak it implies--that happens to be between two 15-year-old guys. Problems of brutality and deprivation are acknowledged but never allowed to dominate, and under the influence of love even the harsh walkways and terraces of the estate take on a sunlit glow. --Philip Kemp
Endless Summer 2
The remake of the 1964 classic Endless Summer. Starring Robert 'Wingnut' Weaver and Patrick O'Connell who are determined to travel the globe in search of waves and sun. They use old surfing buddies and legends to find un-crowded waves all over the world. The film has some great comical moments from the narrator. Not quite as good as the original but if you live to surf then you should still watch this film.
Flipper
TV series about a dolphin and his friends. For many of us the first wet scenes we ever saw. Required viewing.Floating
A film about a friendship set in a beautiful woodland scenery. Some nice wet scenes swimming in the lake.
Free Willy
A brilliant classic that can be watched over and over. It has many beautiful wet scenes with several people. Follow a young foster boy who goes to great lengths to get his befriended whale freed from captivity. He longs to see his companion swin in the deep, blue and wild ocean with his friends once again. A compassionate masterpiece, full of fun and frollicks, but gripping to the end. Get the tissues out. This popular film also had a happy real-life ending: Keiko the whale (who plays Willy) recovered from failing health and was gradually trained to survive outside of captivity.
Free Willy 2
You may recall that Willy jumped the aquarium fence, so to speak, at the end of that 1993 family film, and regrouped in open seas with the pod from which he had been cruelly snatched. This 1995 sequel again finds Willy in trouble at the hands of the civilised world, this time due to an oil slick and explosion that may very well kill him or cause him to be locked away again. Meanwhile, Richter's growing character has other problems, including a troublesome half-brother and the rumblings of puppy love. One way in which this film is superior to its predecessor is a greater range of visual opportunities, namely shooting out on the ocean instead of in the whale hero's old tank.

Free Willy III
Guess who's back in the water? Willy the whale returns with his favorite companion, Jason James Richter, now a 17-year-old aboard an ocean research vessel. This time, they're out to stop a sea captain from illegally killing orca whales in the Pacific Northwest. On their side is the fisherman's 10-year-old boy, Max.There are plenty of wet scenes throughout the movie. One of the best is where Jesse shows Max the whales. They both jump in fully clothed to ride on the orca whales. Filmed on location in British Columbia, near the towns of Squamish and British Beach, the scenery is simply awesome. Great follow up to the equally wet Free Willy 1 and 2 movies.
The Goonies (1985)
Several teens explore an extended wet cave in search for pirate treasures. A corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighbourhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes).
Hard Rain
This movie is so soaking wet most of the time you better take your anorak along. As a story it is pretty poor, but as a spectacle it is superb. Gushing water, tidal waves make this film a must see. Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater star as enemies to start out but then become friends towards the end. The jet ski chase through the school is probably the most well done chase of 1998.
Lassie (1994)
Many wet scenes with Tom Guiry. Great river scene at the end he gets fully soaked including jeans, denim jacket and shoes.
Pointbreak
A gang of surfers dressed up as former Presidents of the United States are robbing banks and it's up to FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) to save the day in this wet and wild action adventure. Swayze is the leader of the surfer gang, a meditating bank robber who dreams of riding the Big Wave. Some great scenes with Keanu Reeves surfing in wetsuits and in wet jeans and t-shirts. It's a wet clothes fantasy.
North Shore
Matt Adler, Nia Peeples, Gregory Harrison star. 96 min.Surf's up for a "hot dog" (Adler) who goes from Arizona to where the boards are--Hawaii's North Shore. There he makes a friend ("soul surfer" Harrison), has a romance, and enters a big-time surf-off. Another great surf movie that features breathtaking surfing footage and wet guys in spandex tops.
This is the story of Rick Kane (Matt Adler) who wins a surfing contest in a wave tank in Arizona. He then decides that he is going to go to the North Shore in Hawaii. Rick quickly finds out that he doesn't know how to surf with the big boys. When he meets up with Chandler (Gregory Harrison) who is an experienced surfer and board maker, Rick learns how to surf with the wave rather than 'cutting it up'. The obvious surf contest happens and Rick puts everything he knows on the line to win.
This film has some of the best surf photography ever seen in a movie with no shortage of wet men. Wet spandex is the order of the day. This is a movie that has some of the best blond twinks you will ever see in a film next to Endless Summer 2. Interestingly except for Matt Adler, Nia Peeples and Gregory Harrison, everyone else are real actual champion surfers. The most magnificent surfer Laird Hamilton shows his great body through many scenes.
Best Wet Bits:
- Rick arrives with his friend Turtle at Laird Hamiltons' house and decides to go swimming with his t-shirt and shorts on.
- Rick is walking with his girlfriend in the fields and it starts to rain on their t-shirts and shorts and her dress.
- Laird Hamilton tries Chandler's board and doesn't like it. He walks out of the surf with very tight white spandex top and shorts. His very blond wet hair is one of the best wet shots.
- The contest at the end provides lots of clips of wet guys (almost all real surfers).

A River Runs Through It
A film about a family into fly fishing. Brad Pitt seems to spend most of the movie in the river up to his waist in water (that's what I remember anyway). The scenery is truly magical. The story of a father, his two sons and their genuine love for fly fishing and nature is contagious. Set aside some time to watch this, you won't be disappointed!!
A River Runs Through It is a lyrical and nostalgic film from director Robert Redford (Quiz Show, Ordinary People), based on the popular autobiographical novel by Norman MacLean. The film chronicles two brothers' coming of age in early 20th-century Missoula, Montana, under the stern tutelage of their minister father (Tom Skerritt). He instils in them a love of fly fishing, which for one brother (Brad Pitt) becomes a lifelong passion even as he sets out to become a newspaperman and struggles with his addiction to gambling. The other brother, Norman (Craig Sheffer), dreams of exploring the world outside Missoula as he falls in love with a local girl (Emily Lloyd) who also dreams of broader horizons. Soon one brother must discover the true meaning of family loyalty when the other finds himself in deeper trouble than ever before. Redford, who also narrates the film, does a masterful job in re-creating the period and in drawing out affecting performances from his young cast. An Oscar winner for Philippe Rousselot's luminescent cinematography, this is a poignant and special film. --Robert Lane, Amazon.com
The River Wild
Is this movie wet? There's barely a dry moment. An exciting adventure for adolescents and adults.Gail (Merryll Streep), her husband Tom (David Strathairn), her 10 year-old son Roarke (Joseph Mazzello) and their dog embark on a river rafting trip. Along the way, they meet fellow rafters, Wade (Kevin Bacon) and Terry (John C. Reilly). Just as the family begins to enjoy their vacation, it becomes a nightmare with the violent effects of nature and men. In this remote and rugged region, the family members are forced to fight for their lives.
The scenery is extraordinary and gives the viewer an appreciation of nature. Gail wants her son to see the river before it becomes polluted. She assumes that the river will be ruined by civilization. Perhaps the scenic beauty and Gail's concern for the river will give adolescents a desire to protect our environment.
Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is flooded with water imagery, a possible reference to baptism and the clear theme of religion. Romeo and Juliet first catch a glimpse of each other through a fish tank, and later swim fully clothed in Juliet's pool, stopping only to kiss passionately. In one of the most magical scenes in the film, a rain-soaked Romeo sneaks into Juliet's room in the middle of the night. She removes the wet clothes clinging to his body and they make love for the first time.
Indeed Romeo+Juliet electrifies on first performance and literally has a new twist on each screening. In all then essential viewing. Spellbinding for romantics from wet puppies to grannies.
Splash
Tom Hanks underwater fully clothed in several scenes. A mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his loveable, blowhard brother (Candy), whose goal in life is to have a letter published in Penthouse. When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret.
But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy. When a wealthy young businessman and a stunning mermaid fall in love the result is sheer comedy. This highly successful movie is based on a story by Brian Grazer.
Titanic
Very wet in second half. Water too cold, no happy end.
A fortune hunter searching for a lost diamond near the wreck of the Titanic brings something else to the surface...a story from the past in which the romance between an upper class American woman and a young male steerage passenger is fated to end before it has really begun. This movie is technically brilliant and the sinking itself is a must see.
This creates both compelling and thrilling viewing, which totally overcomes the moments of bad dialogue (the sinking never loses it's impact on repeated viewings). For people who complain about the thin plot - it's a film set on the Titanic, a complex and "heavy" plot would have been ridiculous and would have bogged down both the pace and energy of what is truly an unforgettable motion picture.
White Squall
Jeff Bridges' film about a school ship full of youths who stay soaked for much of the movie. This is a beautifully photographed movie that will thrill anyone who is drawn to the romance and danger of the open sea.
The story is a rite-of-passage adventure for a group of high school boys, who spend their senior year as the crew-in-training on the Albatross, a sailing vessel skippered by an experienced sailor and schoolmaster (Jeff Bridges) who teaches hard lessons of teamwork and individual responsibility. As they sail to the tip of South America and back, the young men face many challenges that will shape their character, in addition to the carnal pleasures of shore leave in exotic ports of call. It's a traditional story, and Scott doesn't bring anything particularly new to this sailboat variation of Dead Poets Society
Scott's stunning visuals are all present and correct, with the golden photography and queasy camera-work perfectly capturing the force of the sea like no other film I have seen. The youngsters are all excellent as well and the whole film is an oddly compulsive affair, technically brilliant as it is terrifying and moving.
Wild America
Pools, mud, bears, and alligators. Three brothers explore the wild outdoors. Only a few short wet scenes, but still quite good fun for nature lovers. This film shows a close bond between three brothers as they embark on a journey, leaving their small town life behind. The fact that 'Wild America' is based on a true story, makes the story even more exciting.
Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from the American sitcom Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers.
If you're a fan of Jonathans then you'll love this film. As ever his boyish charm shines through and the character will win you over straight away. The two other characters played by Devon Sawa and William Dear are also top rate. The film takes you through some amazing sights that exist throughout America, so if the stars of the film don't appeal to you, then the film is still worth watching, if only for the landscapes and wet scenes.
